Say Goodbye to Toxic Skincare: Introducing Jade Bloom's Facial Spray | Jade Bloom

If you’re a lover of Anthropologie and Mario Badescu Skin Care like I am, or have spent even just 10 minutes inside of an Urban Outfitters, then you’ve probably heard of (or even religiously used) Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater. While MB does make a lot of fantastic products, just a quick look at the ingredients list of this spray proves that this is one of the unfortunate exceptions. My quest to rid my toiletry bag of toxic products brought about some upsetting news regarding MB’s facial spray that was tucked away in my purse on a daily basis.

Below are the ingredients of this outrageously popular Mario Badescu Facial Spray:

Aqua (Water, Eau), Propylene Glycol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Rosa Canina Extract, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Leaf Extract, Fucus Vesiculosus Extract, Gardenia Florida Fruit Extract, Caprylyl Glycol, Hexylene Glycol, Polysorbate 20, Parfum (Fragrance), Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Chloride, Citronellol, Geraniol, CI 17200 (Red 33), CI 42090 (Blue 1).

A quick rundown of why this ingredients list is concerning:

Glycols are potentially irritating and harmful to the skin. Some common examples would be the Propylene, Butylene, Pentylene, Hexylene, and Caprylyl Glycol varieties. Propylene glycol is found in processed foods, Antifreeze, paint, and plastic. It’s also the main ingredient of e-cigarette fluid. Those with poor kidney or liver function, pregnant or nursing mothers, and the elderly are less likely to be able to break down propylene glycol and should limit their exposure to it. Considering the fact that propylene glycol is a mild skin irritant, it’s a wonder why it would ever voluntarily be included in a product meant solely for the skin

Polysorbate 20 is also an irritant and it’s relation to carcinogenic ethylene oxide makes its use in cosmetics a controversial practice. Fragrances are also used in MB’s Facial Spray, rather than the Rosewater scenting the product naturally. Red 33 and Blue 1 are also used, just to make the product pink. Whether this is a feeble attempt at marketing to women, or in the interest of making consumers associate the color with the product’s Rosewater content, we don’t know; but I feel that either of those explanations are equal parts patronizing and superfluous.

All of these unnecessary and harmful ingredients combined with the widespread popularity of this product is why Jade Bloom set out to create a superior option.

The announcement of Jade Bloom’s Facial Spray is something I’ve been having to contain my excitement for throughout the last 6 months.
