Calamus is a member of the Acoraceae family thought to have originated in Asia. It has been used for both aromatic and medicinal purposes since antiquity. The British would place the plant on the floor of dwellings for a pleasing olfactory quality. It was mentioned in the Papyrus of Egypt for its aromatic qualities.
In contemporary alternative medicine, calamus essential oil is thought to have sedative and diuretic properties. In Ayurveda, the plant is used to mitigate the negative side effects of hallucinogens. It is reputed to improve memory retention and allay vertigo and headaches. It does contain a substance called asorone which is considered toxic, therefore this oil should be used with care.
Calamus essential oil is a unique addition to cosmetic applications, personal care formulations, soaps, and aromatherapy.
