The Myth of Essential Oil Grades: What Pure Really Means

We are frequently asked about our "Grades" of essential oils. Our qualities oils are one and the same: 100% Pure as tested by GCMS.

To further this topic, we like to focus on 2 Jade Bloom values in particular that we feel are relevant here: Transparency & Safety
Re: Pharmaceutical and Therapeutic.
These are marketing terms used in the essential oil industry, which we will explore below. Any reference to Pharmaceutical/Therapeutic that's still seen on some places on our products/website, while we've done our best to remove it due to the negative connotation these terms have received when misused/abused by essential oil companies, we'd love to provide context as to why it was included on our labels/on our website to begin with. In the early days of Jade Bloom, the words themselves and the difference between them had to do with our own internal classification between oils that are extracted using cold pressing versus oils that are extracted using steam distillation. While the words are a misnomer, either extraction method for each respective oil is the highest quality available and produce 100% pure essential oil as certified through 3rd party GC/MS testing. GCMS Testing is the only reliable way to indicate the purity of an oil— not classifying it as "Therapeutic" or "Pharmaceutical".

Our cold pressed oils (ie: Orange, Lemon, Grapefruit, Lime, citrus oils in general, etc.) meet certain BP (British Pharmacoepia) requirements, which was why they were referenced as "Pharmaceutical Grade" back in the early days of Jade Bloom.

Our steam distilled oils (ie: Lavender, Cinnamon Bark, Tea Tree, Peppermint, etc.) were classified as Therapeutic, which was internally considered the highest grade available for this method of extracting oil and can be used externally, or aromatically. Here is a video we also made on the subject of the top 10 myths surrounding essential oils, of which, the Pharmaceutical vs Therapeutic controversy is one.

Essential oils are wonderful healing compounds. Worldwide awareness will continue to grow, but in this video, we hope to dispel the misinformation about what essential oils are or are not. Many of the myths discussed in this video are rooted in personal desire or corporate desire to sell more oils to unsuspecting people, a practice we not only do not participate in as a company, but that we see many of the towering essential oil giants that surround us here in Utah participate in. We hope to work directly with consumers to get the facts straight and find healing together in truth. This is not to say that some of these bigger essential oil companies do not have great products and great intentions.

We think it's harmful for the industry as a whole to purport that only one essential oil company has pure, quality oils. We're aware of the fact that many other companies do— We just also happen to be one of them and we care primarily about people using essential oils in general and using them safely, rather than only using one brand. We hope this information helps clarify the topic more in depth for understanding of what has been a rather confusing topic.
