Think mustaches are creepy?  Well, there’s nothing creepy about men’s health.

My name is Adam, and I have been working for Jade Bloom just shy of 3 years now, and I love my job. In my time here I have been desperately wanting to reach our male customer base, with not much success. This month, I will be posting numerous blog posts regarding men’s health issues, as well as reaching out to the men of Jade Bloom in an attempt to create an environment that is appealing to men, while promoting natural products and healthy lifestyles.

Many of you may be familiar with the trend known as “Movember”. Up until recently, I just thought this was a time where men grow out their mustaches for 30 days in some attempt to revive the fashion trend. It wasn’t until I started researching that I realized that it is far more than that.

The Movember Foundation is an organization that began with a mission to raise Prostate Cancer awareness. What started as a conversation about 70’s fashion, has turned into a global effort to raise awareness for men’s health. Here at Jade Bloom, we are aware that our customer base is only about 15% male, but for those of you with husbands, brothers, fathers, grandfathers, sons, and uncles, this is a time that we can start the conversation about Prostate Cancer and other men's health issues. For more information about The Movember Foundation and how you can get involved, you can visit their website at the following link:

Women have done amazing things over the years to raise awareness for women’s health issues. This is something we applaud and stand behind fervently. Unfortunately, it is only recently that men’s health issues have been talked about. Men are dying too young. On average, men die 6 years earlier than women and now is the time for us to start shining a light on this staggering statistic.

Four Jade Bloom employees will be growing their mo’s for the month of November, and their progress will be shown throughout the month in upcoming posts. We encourage our male customers to do the same! Here are some ways you can earn some seeds in the Jade Bloom Game while supporting this cause:

*Post a picture of your mustache on Facebook with the hashtag #menofjadebloom at the beginning of the month, send us a screenshot, and you will be awarded 150 seeds. At the end of the month, post a picture of your mustache in all of its glory with the same hashtag for an additional 300 seeds.

or

*Tag us in a picture of your mustache on Instagram with the hashtag #menofjadebloom and you will be awarded 150 seeds. At the end of the month, tag us in a picture of your the final result and be awarded an additional 300 seeds.

You can do this on either Instagram, or Facebook, but you will only be awarded for your activity on one of the platforms.

6 participants will be entered to win a free bottle of Groom Beard Blend or Tame Pomade.

Your mustache can be used to start the conversation about Prostate Cancer Awareness. When someone looks at you funny and asks, “What’s with the mustache?”, you can then start the conversation about Prostate cancer.

Only men have a prostate gland. The Prostate gland is about the size and shape of a walnut and grows as you age. It is located underneath the bladder and surrounds the urethra, which is what men urinate and ejaculate through. Its purpose is to help men make semen - the fluid that carries sperm. Prostate cancer occurs when some of the cells in the prostate reproduce more rapidly than normal, resulting in a tumor. This cancer normally grows slowly, and may never cause any issues. But, some men have prostate cancer that is more likely to spread. The prostate cancer cells may spread from the prostate and invade other parts of the body, namely the lymph nodes and bones, which can produce secondary tumors. This process is known as metastasis.

It is recommended that every man by the age of 50 should be getting a PSA test. This is a simple blood test that determines the measurement of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) in the blood. You should be talking with your doctor to determine if this test is right for you.

It is more likely that you will develop prostate cancer at an older age, but that doesn’t mean it’s a disease that only affects old men. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide. Men who are African American, and men who have a family history (a brother or father with prostate cancer), are 2.5x more likely to get prostate cancer.

If you’re 50, you should be talking to your doctor about PSA testing. If you’re African American, you need to start that conversation at 45. And if you have a brother or father with prostate cancer in their history, you should do it at 45.

Jade Bloom is all about Health, Healing and Happiness®. You’ll notice that nothing in this post has anything to do with essential oils. This is for a few reasons, namely the fact that there is no concrete evidence or lifelong studies to suggest that essential oils can cure or prevent any type of cancer, nor does Jade Bloom make any such claims. Obviously, Health, Healing and Happiness® is not specific to essential oils or natural products, though they are a large part of what we believe in. A healthy lifestyle, in combination with the use of essential oils and natural products, is a wonderful way that we can improve our quality of life.
